Front garden design requires a distinctly different approach to that used in the back garden. Firstly, it is doubtful that we are likely to entertain in the front garden, or sunbathe for that matter, and few people hang their washing out across the front lawn. However, we have a major eyesore which needs dealing with and that comes in the shape of the motor car. There is a great temptation to pave the whole front garden to provide as much space as possible for parking but this can be a waste of money, creating something which is not very edifying. The fact is that cars cannot use all the space available so there are always opportunities within the garden design to create planting areas without interfering with the usable space. These planting areas are important because they can be the difference between a front garden and a car park - and can save a lot of money by reducing the amount of paving required.NOTE: MANY PLANNING DEPARTMENTS WILL NO LONGER ALLOW A FRONT GARDEN TO BE COMPLETELY PAVED UNLESS POROUS PAVING IS USED. THIS CAN BE EXPENSIVE BUT A WELL DESIGNED GARDEN, HOWEVER, CAN STILL USE REGULAR PAVING AS A DESIGNED GARDEN WILL ALWAYS ALLOW WATER TO DRAIN AWAY.
The planting design in the front garden should also be different from that used in the back garden. As the area is more likely to be in use all the year round more winter flowering and structural plants are required and I like to include plenty of winter flowering bulbs as these give everyone a lift on those dark winter mornings as they are often the first signs of spring.
The other important feature of a front garden is that it is often the first impression people have of you and your lifestyle. It should incorporate a welcoming path up to the front door (a good example of this can be found in the third garden below).
